Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. Recording, organizing, tagging, searching and playing all work without an account, and nothing leaves your phone.

An account is for Sync (a subscription on top of Pro) and for using Pro on more than one kind of device. Sign in with Apple, Google or an emailed code, from Settings → Account & Sync. Anything you recorded before signing in comes with you.

I bought Pro on the website. How do I unlock the app?

Your Pro licence key is emailed to the address you paid with, usually within a minute. Then:

  • Mac, Windows or Linux: Settings → Pro → Enter licence key, or click the link in the email.
  • Android: tap the link in the email, or paste the key in Settings → Pro.
  • iPhone: add the key to your account (open Account at the top of this page), then sign in on your iPhone with the same account.

No email after ten minutes? Check spam, then email us.

Where are my recordings stored?

On your phone, in the app’s own storage. That is the only copy until you sign in to sync or make a backup.

When you sign in, your recordings and what describes them (names, notes, tags, and the recording location if you have that turned on) are also stored on our servers, so your other devices can fetch them. Signing out leaves the recordings on your phone.

How do I back up and restore?

Back up: go to Settings → Library → Back up library…. It makes one zip of your whole library (the original audio, filed by folder, plus your notes, tags and folders) and hands it to the share sheet, so you can save it to Files, iCloud Drive, Dropbox or a computer. No account needed. Keep the app open until it finishes. The same screen can remind you to back up every few days. If your library is end-to-end encrypted, the backup isn’t: anyone with the zip can open it, and restoring it doesn’t need your recovery key.

Restore: go to Settings → Library → Restore from backup… and pick the zip. Choose Merge to add only what’s missing, Replace with backup to make the library match the backup, or Into a new folder to bring it in alongside what you have. You can restore everything or just the folders you choose.

How do I move recordings between devices?

With Sync, sign in to the same account on both devices (Settings → Account & Sync) and your library syncs between them, including recordings you made before signing in.

Without an account, make a backup on one device (Settings → Library → Back up library…), get the zip to the other one, and restore it there (Restore from backup…). To send a single recording, open its menu and tap Share….

Is my library end-to-end encrypted?

It can be. End-to-end encryption is part of Sync, at no extra cost, and it’s off until you turn it on, in Settings → Account & Sync → End-to-end encryption. With it on, your recordings, their names, your notes, tags and places are sealed on your phone before they’re uploaded, with a key only your devices hold, so we can’t read them. To add another phone, scan the code your first phone shows, or type your 24-word recovery key.

End-to-end encryption is in the iPhone and Android apps, and it’s coming to the desktop app. Until then, an end-to-end encrypted library doesn’t sync on the desktop app.

Keep your recovery key somewhere safe. If you lose every device and your recovery key, your library can’t be recovered, not by you and not by us. That’s why it’s off until you choose it.

It doesn’t hide that your library exists, or its shape: how many recordings and folders there are, how they nest, and their dates, lengths and sizes. A backup file you make yourself isn’t encrypted, so keep it somewhere you trust.

How do I import recordings from Voice Memos?

Voice Memos shares its recordings through the share sheet:

  1. Open Voice Memos and select a recording.
  2. Tap ⋯, then Share.
  3. Choose the app from the list. The first time, it may be under More.

The recording lands in your Inbox, ready to file. For audio files you already have in Files or iCloud Drive, use Settings → Recording → Import audio, which can take several at once.

How do I delete my account and data?

Go to Settings → Account & Sync → Delete account (you have to be signed in to see it), and confirm twice. That deletes your account and everything synced to our servers, for good. It cannot be undone.

The recordings on your phone are left where they are. To remove those too, delete them in the app (they go to Recently deleted, which you can empty from Settings → Library), or delete the app.

If you can’t sign in any more, email us from this page and we’ll delete the account for you.

Is there a Mac, Windows, Linux or Android version?

Yes, for most of them. The desktop app runs on Mac, Windows and Linux, and it’s in the download section of the homepage. On a Mac, the desktop app is the Mac version.

The iPhone app is coming to the App Store, and Android after that.

There’s no version that runs in a web browser: on a computer, use the desktop app.

How to report a bug

Thanks for taking the time. Start a new topic in Bug reports, one bug per topic, and include:

  1. What you did: the steps, in order, so we can do the same.
  2. What you expected to happen.
  3. What happened instead, including any message the app showed, word for word.
  4. The app version: in the app, Settings → About, the Version row.
  5. Your device and iOS version, for example “iPhone 15, iOS 26”. Your iPhone’s own Settings app shows both under General → About.
  6. The diagnostics report (steps below).
  7. Screenshots or a screen recording, if you can. They help more than anything.

Getting the diagnostics report

  1. In the app, open Settings → About.
  2. Press and hold the Version row for about a second. The Sync diagnostics screen opens.
  3. Tap Copy diagnostics and paste it into your post. Or tap Share, choose Diagnostics only, and attach the text file.

What’s in the report, and when to email instead

Diagnostics only is ids, times and counts, plus the email address you signed in with. It contains nothing from your library.

Add the history also includes what you did recently, with clip, folder and tag names. Don’t post that version on the forum: choose Diagnostics only, or email the report to us privately. Email is also the right place for anything about your account or your data.
